In September 2012, the province of La Union
passed an ordinance recognizing Ilokano (Iloko) as an official
provincial language, alongside Filipino and English as national and
official languages of the Philippines, respectively. It is the first
province in the Philippines to pass an ordinance protecting and
revitalizing a native languag
The Ilocano or Ilokano people are the third largest Filipino enthnolonguistic
group. Aside from being referred to as Ilocanos (from "i" – 'from', and
"looc" – 'bay'), they also refer to themselves as Samtoy, from the
Ilocano phrase "sao mi ditoy", meaning 'our language origin'. The word
"Ilocano" came from the word "Iloco" or "Yloco."
